Hey all, looking for any local Maryland or nearby sources for good soil components, aside from the fairly standard DE/NAPA 8822 or Oil Dry/Calcined Clay options.

I'd especially like to find good local sources for things like pine bark fines and inert materials like pumice or lava rock.

You can find pine fines from a brand called Lumberjack in a lot of nurseries/farm supply stores. It has to be sifted.

Pumice and lava - almost impossible to find at non-bonsai suppliers.

Best supplier anywhere near is up in Harrisburg, PA. Superfly Bonsai, merged with Meco bonsai last year. They have an EXTENSIVE selection of specialized soil and soil components. I've bought a few bags of soil, as well as a couple of bags of pumice from them at local shows.

Thanks guys. Yeah I know pumice and lava have no local sourcing out here on the East coast. I think I saw Superfly at the show in DC last June, I may have a trip up north this spring, I'll have to see if I can swing by.

We get screwed in the soil department in the DMV, just like everything else. Mehans sometimes sells bulk, but depends.

Forgot to ask, how about Turface MVP? I believe that's the correct variety. Anyone know local sources? My searches have had iffy results at best.

I have found Turface rebranded at Auto Zone for about $10 a bag and at Rural King for $5 a bag. For $5 a bag why would I use anything else? It seems to be identical to the brand Turface. I have had some in a jar of water for about four months now with no degradation. I also have fir bark, coconut choir, pumice, lava stone and crushed granite. I use these a bit but my $5 Turface is my main stay.

Call ahead. Southern states locations sometimes have it , but don’t list it on their website.

The name at Rural King is Leak Absorbent. The product at Auto Zone I don't know. Bought it once to compare it. It was same product but more expensive so I don't use it.
