This has been in a large pot for at least 15 years or more. It's 5 feet from pot surface to top.
Never gave it a thought until we tried to move the pot.
Roots went through drain hole and quite a ways into ground.
Gardener moved the pot by cutting the roots at the pot bottom.
Plus the pot has broken at the lower quarter. Soil is exposed but not roots.

We'd like to move this into a redwood square box and keep it.

I took pix today. It ....seems... less bright green than it was but that could be due to no feeding and neglect except for sporadic water.

How's it look to you?

I have repotted lodgepoles in late summer/early fall before. They all survived, but weren't as vigorous as those repotted in the spring. As long as you preserve plenty of fine roots and keep lots of original soil, it should be alright.

Perhaps he was extrapolating a mental picture of the pot?
