When I saw this special pomegranate, I feel lonely! This tree has been in my teacher's garden, Mr. Richard Ota, for around 22 years. He told me it was from the seed! In spite of being there for seven years and six months but I never paid attention to this one! One day in September 2014, suddenly I had my eyes on it and every thing came clear! Mr. Ota recognized that I fell in love with it and told me that I could give it a try!

The tree has lot of natural deadwood from the top down to the soil line, with only 2 branches. Its soil had very poor drainage. Its trunk base is 4.5", height 27".

The downward branch was accidentally broken due to the strong wind few years ago.
Because one branch was up, one was down, I had to remove one.
Then, I used the chopstick to make multiple deep holes in the soil to help the soil drainage. It was also prescribed lot of organic fertilizer (chicken manure pellets)

It has a lot of potential, but it looks very weak. I think you will want to prioritize repotting and getting it really strong...

(On an unrelated topic Bonhe - we are having a meeting of the Orange County Study Group next weekend)

On 1/3/2015, I transplanted it to the bonsai pot. This pot is little deep for this tree, but it is needed for training purpose.
On the bottom, I used medium size pumice.
In the bottom half of pot, I used small size pumice: akadama: fir ground with ratio 1:1:1
In the top half of pot, I used lava cinder: akadama: garden soil with ratio 1:1:1
Tree was heavy root bound with lot of large roots to be removed!
As you can see, its deadwood is so fantastic! We need to learn those deadwood characteristics to apply on our bonsai training technique!

I like this tree! Awesome deadwood.

I planted some pom seeds last year. After taking advice from Leo, well somewhat, I put one out on the enclosed for winter back stairway by the window. With a lavender.

Now, they say lavender can withstand drought. It is in more moisture retentive soil than the pom, and it died.

The pom still has green popping, I don't water them at all!

These things are freaking tuff!

Can't wait to see the progression!

Thank you Sorce. Pomegranate is one of my favorite! Because it's hard to be killed even with inexperienced person, it is good choice for new hobbyist!
It can be propagated through the cutting (even with very large cutting - talking about 40 - 50 cm cutting!!)

It has lot of new shoots now. I really like it. I believe in few more years, its branch system will be much better.
