Followed everyone's advice from my last post and air layered the top of my Chinese elm. Still kind of at a loss for what to do next in terms of styling. Maybe try to get rid of the S shape. It’s my first tree so just hoping to learn from it and hear any advice you all have. Attached before and afters and other pics below.

(the yarn is temporary...it started to tilt forward and I didn't want to mess with the new roots too much right before winter)

Wasn't getting rid of the "s" shape part of step one?

Looks like the same tree except with branches where you kinda need them.

This is equal parts good and equal parts bad.

Good because you have had many successes, horticulturally.
Bad because the design still doesn't "make sense".

This part probably should've been eliminated from the beginning.

I'd cut it back to them greens and start paying attention to neatly controlling it's growth.

To fit into a design you should probably draw a picture of, however childish of a drawing, then cut the tree to make the image.

9?
The trunk shape is OK now.
Time to move on to developing branches. Current branches need to be chopped back reasonably short to promote more side branches. Treat individual branches a bit like trunks - leave side branches on outside of bends thin out where there's too many and keep cutting long shoots to promote density.
