I’m bad about remembering to take pictures before I start working on a tree and this is no exception.

Fall 2019, after I’d repotted it into bonsai soil in this large planter with the intention of growing it out and thickening up the trunk a bit while I take air layers off the top:


I’ve since taken a couple of layers from it. First one failed. Second one is still alive for now. Hopefully, will still be alive in the spring. Need to take some new pictures.

After the air layer was harvested:

Repotted it today into a shallower mica pot. Used a bit of coarse lava rock and perlite for a drainage layer with Aoki mix for the main soil mix. Did quite a bit of root work. Planning to just let it grow out this season without taking any air layers or trimming it at all. Used a couple pieces of clear aquarium air tubing slipped onto the aluminum wire for the tie downs so as to protect the bark where the wires meet the roots.

Carved the wounds with the Dremel to smooth the surface and make it concave to help it heal over nicely:
