Sango Kaku JM air layer (2021):

The parent tree is Sango Kaku #1. I started the air layer in spring, shortly after it pushed the new leaves. Girdled the branch with a grafting knife, scraped the cambium layer off, and wrapped with moist sphagnum moss. Harvested the layer about a month ago and potted in Boon mix.

Akadama, pumice, and lava is my standard mix that I use. I use fresh substrate for my more mature trees in refinement and use recycled substrate for younger trees in development. So, odds are that I used recycled substrate for this tree, providing that I had some available at the time. My recycled substrate typically has a little bit of fir bark and/or horticultural charcoal in it because I don’t bother keeping tropical tree soil separate from the rest when I recycle soil. So, there may be a little bit of some organics in the mix, but I don’t intentionally add organics to anything but my tropical tree substrate mix.
