Hi Guys and Gals,

I will be flying out of LAX this weekend and will have some time to kill between a business meeting and my flight. I won’t need to fly with any trees if I purchase as I will be flying back into LA and driving home. I will also have a good Friend’s house to leave any trees while I’m traveling.

My question is:

Any recommended nurseries in the LA area I NEED to check out? Would love to hear your opinions! Thank you in advance!

😎🤙🏼

You might already know about it but bonsai-a-thon will be going on this weekend at the Huntington. I haven't been but sounds like there will be a lot of vendors selling trees and pots:

Those suggestions from BVF are all good, Chikugo-En and Kimura are both on my list but I haven't had time to get all the way up there to visit them (1-2 hours+ from where I am).

House of Bonsai is my go-to nursery. They have a ton of stuff, especially if you're looking for pre-bonsai. My first "real" tree was this pre-bonsai procumbens I got from them. They've got everything from seedlings up to 30+ year old trees and everything in between.

Funny story, they do a workshop on Saturdays and this couple bought their first bonsai ever, a juniper that was probably 20-30 yrs old, super cool movement. The guy Tino running the workshop basically worked on it for 3 hours and when they left they had an incredible tree with all sorts of wiring and jin. Not bad for a first tree!

Thanks for the thorough response dude! House of bonsai has been on my list and will be close by where I’m staying on my overnight, so I’ll check it out. Think I’ll stop into Kimura on my drive back up to Central Valley! Thank me again.

So Kimura Bonsai was closed today, so I just headed to Monkish in Torrance, a brewery of amazing beer I used to frequent when I lived down here. If you like beer and you’re ever around, I’d highly recommend.

Cheers Nutties🍻

Nice, I’ll have to put it on the long list of places to check out! It looks like they have a good range and not just 50 different versions of west coast IPAs like some breweries out here!

Hell yeah! Great beers, glad to see they're back open after all the pandemic stuff. Lately I've really been enjoying Smog City nearby as well. Man, beers and bonsai tour of the LA area would be a pretty good way to spend a day. I just know I'm not offering to drive! 😵

Kimura has a lot of great pre bonsai, felt like they had literal tons of Caitlin Elms. Most of their pre-bonsai stock are really expensive though, but they are good quality.
I went to Yamaguchi a few years ago before I even started Bonsai. I remember them having potted Bonsai only and no Pre-Bonsai. This was three years ago though so things might have changed.
