We have a species of Lycium here (I think it may be pallidum). I have some nice ones on my land. I was planning on collecting them, until I saw a particularly nice, large specimen drop a major branch for no apparent reason. Is this your first experience with it? Keep us posted!

No I have had a few and I have three of these and one lycium fremontii. There are actually several other species that are native. you mentioned L. pallidum, there is also L. exsertum. I am growing them along with some L. barbatum and I have some L. ruthenicum (black goji) seeds that I am going to try to get going as well. I think it would be cool if they all crossed.

How are these best cared for? I grew a couple of these from seed and they are about a year old now. I like the small leaves and rough light colored bark. However, I live in a rainy valley on Oahu and worry that it may be too humid here so I try not to water them very often. Any tips on a good soil mix for them?

I would just use a very free draining mix. Where these are native only gets 2-3 inches of rain per year so you won't have to water them often for sure. As much sun as you can get them also. Good luck and update from time to time. I'm interested in how they do for you.
