Can't grow just one kind.
42 of these.
I did notice something with these and the Scots seedlings.
They have very short stems compared to JBP seedlings.
So no need for seedling cutting.
These are Mugo Rostrata. An upright growing one.20180818_101249.jpg

Mike
,
did you have to soak seeds for 24 hrs ?
I ask because one of the seed companies sent a pack
of Mughos, with the J.B.pines.
Will try to germinate after Christmas.

Advice ?
Thanks.
Anthony

Yes. I soaked them for 24.
I kept them in the refrigerator for a few months because I got them in December. Almost all germinated.
I have them planted in just miracle grow potting soil.
Next year each gets a 4" pot and D.E. and lava.
I imagine I'll winter them just like the grown up mugo pines.

That's why I'm growing my own.
I still have time to let a few go 10 maybe 15 years.

I saw scheffields had the rostratas. If I ever tried a single flush from seed I think that's the variety I'd do

I've got 18 2nd year mugo rostrata going from one of the $3 sample packs off Fw Schumacher. Will be interesting to see how they work out in comparison.

Dear Mike @M. Frary could you please look at the pictures below and tell if there is any difference between these two pine saplings (age around 3 months)?
They are supposed to be JBP both of them.
But one is obviously differing in colour (leaning to bluish), in rate of growth (slower)
Might this be something else than JBP? A scots pine or a mugo perhaps?
Thank you in advance.

Honestly.
I havent the slightest idea.
When they're this size they all look the same to me.

Even the same species of Pine or any other species of tree for that matter, will not reproduce accurately without difference or anomalies from each other. That's why cultivars are always grafted. In short just because there are differences here that does not mean they are not genetically the same.

Only 20 of these made it last winter.
The one end wasn't encased in ice so voles got them some tender young mugo pines.
Same as the scots, they went into the cups and D.E. a week ago.
They were also barerooted and had tap roots cut off.
