Hi,

I have this Madroño and it has 2 problems which might be the same. I see some leaves going bad and I see these black things (scale insects maybe). These are very hard,
I hope somebody knows what it is and what to do.

Arbustus unedo for those who don't know the Madroño.
I think we'll need more information : exposure, substrate, watering, how often do you fertilize, ....

That being said, it's very likely that it just suffered from the heat.

Edit : I just noticed the white stuff on the leaves that I didn't see before.... so maybe a pest of some type??

It is in the big nursery pot. Nursery soil. Daily watering.
No fertiliser atm because of the summer heat. Starting soon.
There is sun from early morning until 1400h. (Balcony)

I see these burn marks on the leaves are not on the branches with these black things. Separate issues…

Investigate the black things. Could they be scale insects? Try picking a few off with a knife or needle. Scale insects have a hard shell and soft underneath.

If it is a scale insect infestation, use a locally approved pesticide. Key wil be repeat applications as only the juveniles are susceptible to pesticides while in their crawling phase. Read and follow directions on your pesticide's label.

There might be some dust & chalk. It looks fine except the burned parts.
