Mame contest part two:
prepare the tree and get it in the mame sized pot.
1 year and 3 months
(20-08-2017 -- 20-11-2018)

----------------------------

This thread is to post updates on all contending mame tree's to prove that the tree's realy are in their mame pots that fit withiin the pot size restriction:

Maximum pot size is 4.5 inches or 11.43 cm in length across the front viewing side.

Maximum pot size with cascade pots is 4.5 inch or 11.43 cm from rim of pot to botom.

A contest is not a contest if there wouldnt be rules so unfortunatly If the pot is larger the tree will be disqualified.

----------------------------
update posting rules:

Please post the entry picture (found in the Entry thread)
And a recent picture where the pot is measured.

You are allowed (encouraged) to post as many progression pics as you like with this update

Please post each entered tree individualy in A post in this update thread

----------------------------
please only update pics in his topic

I'll start things off with my Dwarf Crape Myrtle Pokomoke. I purchased this at The Great Big Greenhouse in May 2017 for about $25 as I recall.

2017-05-28 10.04.12_zpsvwh55tuc.jpg

I picked this one out of the bunch because I thought I saw a decent trunk line. I picked pokomoke in general because they can handle what I was about to do. I chopped it and put it straight into a mame pot in early June 17.

20170615_190242_zpshzbzi43w.jpg

It survived that operation and stared to grow some branches.

2018-10-06 07.24.37.jpg

Looking a little better but there were too many branches and I wasn't crazy about the pot.

2018-10-06 07.23.15.jpg

So in 2018 it got a new Bokeno pot that's 4.5" across the front but much shallower. So I sat it inside a 6" pot to let the roots escape.

2018-06-06 18.55.08.jpg

It grew well over the summer and filled in quite a bit.

2018-08-18 13.16.43.jpg

And the roots definitely escaped.

2018-08-18 13.35.30.jpg

Finally, here it is today 10/6/18. Still a ways to go but I'm pretty happy with the progress so far. I'll continue to develop branches and ramification next year.

My 2nd entry is an unknown variety of crape myrtle that I pulled out of the gravel driveway at my wife's old house. I originally wanted to make this tree look like a standard crape myrtle form that you see in almost every yard in the south. Here it is in summer of 2015 and again. In 2016.

In 2017, I replanted into a larger, shallower pot to try to help the nebari. I was contemplating chops at the red lines.

This contest came about, which pushed me to go ahead and do it.

IMGP0245_zpskd6nf1qk.jpg

It went into a tiny 3" pot and survived through the summer.

2018-06-06 18.53.50.jpg

But I thought it would be happier in a slightly larger pot. This is another 4.5" Bokeno.

2018-08-18 13.18.30.jpg

And today. I think it's starting to take on an oak like form. I still have to carve one of the chops and continue to work on the branches, but it's making some progress.

OK, tree number one started life as this. lol.

1538833329353.png

As it was in the June update. I cut out lots of the dead branches up top.

1538833505897.png

As it is today, it's sitting a touch high in the pot and not at the greatest angle but that will be rectified with up coming repots. I'm now trying to work on extra branching but it's tough, wiring is a perilous business with bougs.
Not the greatest time of year for pics either as it is past its best.

Not sure how my entries are going to fair as mid winter we will be moving to France so hopefully I can take them and even more hopefully they survive the trip and then hope they survive the winter.

2nd entry to follow.

So tree number two started off like this.

1538834914329.png

The June update it wasn't going to plan really.

1538834862962.png

As it is today, I have struggled for ideas with this tree and the day I eventually came up with one I promptly snapped a branch off so thankfully there is some new growth in roughly the same spot. I recently defoliated it too as oddly enough this suffers from over watering. It has only ever gotten one watering a day and I can see algae at the base of the trunk so I think there must be an issue with the pot drainage. The DE hold lots of water too so likely amplifies it.
Next year the pot goes, I never liked it for a boug but it fit the purpose of getting it into a pot for the comp.

My entry photo for the Boston Ivy...
image.jpg

Pot is a Masako Kunii Bonsai pot from Japan. That in itself was an experience purchasing. Just a side by of where it will go once repotted.
image.jpg

I got scissor happy before taking the photo of the crazy mess of vines that came from the tree.
image.jpg

Early spring it was repotted...into its mame pot.
image.jpg

Had every intention to wait for fall colors to post. But, today seems as good as any. I have a lot going on at this end...so I best do it now. So not to DQ.

Here is my Broom-style Fukien Tea.

The bench is made from a 2x4 frame, that you can see below the slats, to give an impression of the size of the pot.

I'll post more pics when I get home, I've sadly put all of my trees indoors for the season, we are expecting some mid-50's to high 40's weather this weekend... :(

Udog's entry number two:
Serissa Foetida (Snow Rose)
1541944762457.png
Started from a cutting a month before the contest but grew very well this season.

Repotted June 30. I want to swap pot with the WL Ficus next year as the slanting pot goes better with this slanting tree.

Third and final attempt.
Parthenocissus quinquefolia, known as Virginia creeper
IMG_20170817_152759732.jpg
Another strong grower this summer. One 6ft and one 5ft tendril.
IMG_20180823_193607375.jpg
Chosen for it's fall colors and quirkiness. Found the Mame training pot slightly out of rule spec so I picked up a Lynn August pot worth more than all three trees combined LOL Repot done way too late in the season Oct 9.

This one has developed fairly well. Growth slowed down once it was put into the small pot but the health seems okay. I have had the small pot placed into a larger one to help even out the moisture fluctuations between watering and to allow some escape roots to form. The tree is not showing what I would call vigor but it has not declined either.

In the spring I will cut back pretty much everything to encourage back budding so that I can start building branches. Alternately I may do some thread grafting to get branches where I want them. If that is the case I will likely need to pull the tree from the contest. I just don’t think there will be enough time to build the semblance of a canopy.

Here is the tree as it looked entering the contest:

IMG_20170617_113950415~2.jpgIMG_20170617_114101440.jpg

At repot:

IMG_20180421_154336500~2.jpg

This not really part of the contest but here is what it looked like shortly after collection and a little less than a year later:

20130627_153227~2.jpg20140502_175801.jpg

This tree was collected the spring 2013 as a twin trunk. The larger of the two trunks was about 3” in diameter. After collection only suckers grew from the stump. By the end of the second season only one part of the base of the smaller trunk was still alive.

I didn’t have the heart to get rid of it so I just kept potting down the part that was still alive. When this contest came around it looked like a good opportunity to try to make it into something. I estimated the original tree to be about 25 years old at collection.
