I think it would be realy cool to create a mame bonsai

Maybe even cooler to do it in contest style to inspire people to do more mame trees or at least try to create one out of a tree you already own..
Instead of pruning a branch airlayer it to create a mame tree

I think to many little trees are pruned off and thrown away

what ya think ?
Ideas, suggestions?

I seriously can't buy / take / collect / acquire any more trees.... need to buckle down and work with the 45+ I have started...
(Never expected to ever own this many trees...all plantings included (accents, flowers and such), I'm over 50 now... )
No more room on the deck!

I'd love to watch though....:D

Ill set up some rules and toughts up later it could stay without costs i guess
Unless your rules contain the line "must have been in pot more than a year" its not really a bonsai. Anyone can jerk a small liner plant into a small pot and call it Mame. A true Mame bonsai will have had training and wire and be ready to be put into a show pot. It has to have some patina of age and not look just planted. Living more than a year in a small pot is a testament to the complexity of the art.

Mame height limits are 6 inches from rim of pot.

but you do what you wish....

Are you saying a box store challenge over the course of a couple years like the others? I think that's a good idea since generally mame can be created faster... like my seiju in this thread?

I think I made a TON of progress on the little tree in a short amount of time. I need to update it too..

Well actualy my idea was to collect or airlayer something small and pot it up
keep it alive and style it the next year and then see what every one has after 2 or maybe 3 years ?

But a mame boxstore challenge sounds good as well...
This is why i started this thread to see if people would like this and how they would like it so thnx for your input smoke!

I think these small contests are Ok but it seems the goal is to make something for the long haul. Maybe a Mame /Shohin three year time capsule would be good. It can be cut off after a period of time and then in three years it would be interesting to see what comes.

BVF's 3 year time capsule is due to unveil next year.

Long term seems a good idea.
Although what do people do in hot climates over summer, seems to me they would dry out real quick. My only attempt so far has suffered that fate and it is not even summer yet.
I asked someone here how to do that on hot days while at work and the answer was realy simple:
Just put the small pot into a slightly larger pot and it will dry out slower

Thats my point about shohin and mame, unless you have had it in a pot for at least a year, it is not even worthy. It takes a lot of work to keep the small trees I have thru summers of weeks of 106 temps. Many of these contest trees are dead after a few months. Why not do something over a period of years and see the real progression.

Hhmm then how about this
Contest collecting mame
Search for something to airlayer or dig up out of your garden to create a mame with and keep it alive for one year.

Then every one who manages to keep it alive we can do a followup competition with best mame progression over two years with each 6 months a update or domething?

Check your soil mix, our mame' are watered like the bigger trees - 1 in the early evening and - twice in the morning.
Placement is full sun and there are at times very strong breezes all day long.
Of course Darlene :) our summer temps are the middle 80's and it is the rainy season, though not bucket a drop
with breezes.

Still an addition of a water holding inorganic and some aged compost or peat moss would help.
Mame' also use 3 mm particles.
compost = 20 times weight in water
peat moss = 15 times weight in water.

The trick is get the pot root bound during the growing season. That way the watering does no harm.

Mame' have the same lifespan as normal Bonsai.
They are not problematic.
Good Day

My entry.
Used in last falls challenge.
That it's alive is shocking. Thought for sure I killed for that contest.
Just under 6 inches tall. 20170506_142631.jpg I have a 4 inch blue glazed rectangle pot to shove it into.
That might kill it but if it wins another contest so what?
