Here is a fun little tree; Standard acer palmatum, showing deep fall color. 3 years since digging this from under a large landscape JM. The first year I wired the lowest section with turns at each node. Thinking about putting this in the ground in the next week to thicken the trunk and let the top run all next year.

thats an awesome little tree. if it were mine i wouldnt put it in the ground but hardcut it a few inches above the bottom branching and enjoy its growth (albeit slow growth) root work could help with taper during every couple year repots.

quality of quantity, thank god ;)

Agree with not planting in the ground for small bonsai. It is far too easy to lose a good small tree when they grow too large during summer. If you only have one it may be possible to manage growth better but there's a fine line between thick and far too thick. Listen to @hinmo24t Quality is worth the extra year or 2.

This tree got a hard root clean up and new metal base. Keeping the main leader long this year as I would like it to still gain some more girth. There was a gap in the nebari on one side so I cut in and added root hormone gel.
