Curious if it is possible to propagate Japanese Maples from cuttings using a Oxyclone Hydrofarm recirculating unit. Do they respond well to the oxygen and water? Or do they require soil? I was thinking of adding some rooting hormone solution to the water but I am reading that just plan tap water is used.

Ask me why I forget which one of these people uses hydros!

@cbroad @cmeg1 @CWTurner lol!

It might even be 2 of em! 🤔😁

Might give a try...I will check my instructions from teacher and relay to this thread. I actually might look into them myself as there’s no humidity shock from taking off dome to stay in the fresh air.
If you’re in a rush humidity shock and really slow progress after they root and then transition.
I actually have a cloner...
Maples seem to dislike indoor lighting as I believe they enjoy green hue light of shade?

the cloner I was going to use has no dome, so if I use an indoor light maples prefer a certain type of bulb?

awesome thanks
Ok ,so I have an aeroponic cloner...King clone.
I never had much luck although I did see callous on hard to root varieties.
So I watched my Harley Smith video and he seems to incline towards a really non fussy approach concerning the water in the cloner...it being a diluted mix of humic, fulvic, and kelp.A more organic approach.
I decided no to do the organic thing ,so no buildup in my clone like cloged tips and such.
I looked at an article online about aeroponic cloner secrets. They state that a low ec of nutrients increases rooting time and bulk. And also rooting hormones. And also using a solution cleaner throughout process so you can run higher temps and keep the pump on 24/7.I read alot of people putting the pumps on cycle timers, but this author states better succes with higher temps. The pump will heat the water so be careful.
I used some zelkova from a couple of my ugly duckling trees, but good qualities non-the-less with very short internodes and good health. They have excellent vascular systems and are very high brix.
I never really over fed,but in future I will feed motherplant formulas.
I want this to work because humidity shock is a real set back when bringing out of a propogator, eapecially finiky species.
I also like the idea if propogating select ,very good performing trees to develop and sell as I have a small business.Good growers use seed and cuttings and choose overachieving specimins to propogate...as which I do have a few that are performing pheonominally!!
I feel good about this as a good vascular system helps consideralbly with cuttings. These have much increased calcium uptake theough use of L Glycine and L Glutamic Amino acids. If not thousands of times more than your average plant.
The author also advocates running t5 lights much closer to canopy of cuttings ...even a 4-8 light fixture.I am using 3.

the products I used

I used ro water( although many say tap is fine)
I added 16 ml per gallon of clonex solution..... .7or .8 ec I think it was.
Used clear rez for cleanliness at higher temps.Im sure temperature will raise from pump running.
And dip&grow for about 10 minute dip at 20% strength and also 1.5 ml of 20% dip&grow per 2.5 gallons of cloner water as per a article I read from a marijuana grower.
Here is link to marijuana grower..deamon tric I think is his name....gives very promising advice with photos for proof.......This is not the first time I took marijuana growing advice and had excellent results in the past hopefully this time too!
I am already familiar with extra long dips as they definately increase rooting.I love dip&grow!!

Thanks for the info. =)
I am going to build a custom cloner using a fishtank setup. There seems to be two kinds. One with mister spray and the other with the cutting semi submerged in the water using bubbles. I am thinking that the challenges with Japanese Maples might be they don't like soggy roots. Perhaps the misting system would be better than submerged bubble approach? My maples seem to appreciate not being watered too often. So the thought of their roots being dipped/soaking 24/7 has me concerned, but would this be only for established roots and not fresh cutting roots?

Cloners do well....it is a spray of water while suspended in air........the leaves of Japanese maple may wilt...not sure.
I got a bette light yesterday............I have confidence I will see rooting......these are high Brix cuttings with good vascular systems from the use of increased calcium uptake......use amino acids L glycine and L glutamate.
Good luck! I believe essential really to do what the grower suggests, except for the lighting distance for Japanese maple should be considerably further away I would think.I visited my hydro store owner at his house yesterday and he suggested bloom nutrients in the water as well along with the higher water temperatures from leaving pump on 24/7, but definately add the Clear Rez to control algae and bacteria.Mine always between 78-83degress F
fingers crossed..........Aeroponic cloning much simpler really...if I can get it to work.

Your plants look pretty healthy, hope that works out for ya. Thanks for sharing the pics.
Yesterday I ended up making a makeshift diy fogponic cloner from in an old tote crate I had laying around for an experiment using a reptile fog machine. For comparison I went ahead and ordered a clone king to compare the two. The product I am looking at for rooting hormone is K-L-N Concentrate by Dyna-Gro. Their products seem to be used a lot for maples. I also saw a video of someone adding a few willow cuttings to the cloner saying that they naturally add a hormone to help the rooting process. From what I am reading cloning tree species in a cloner is more difficult so this will definitely be an experiment. At very small ratios would adding apple cider vinegar to the water to lower the pH be alright? We have hard water where I live and I give my mother maple trees a soak with APC ratio 1tbsp per 5 gallons once a month. Wondering if the same practice might help the cloning process.

Please share your experience using the fog generators. I plan on making a propagation chamber using one in a 40 gallon breeder aquarium i a couple of months for summer cuttings.

I am going to keep it going alongside the misting cloner and will share how it's working out. At some point I might get a ultrasonic fog float, they seem to be pretty handy (yet expensive) where you don't have to refill water as much. The reptile fogger I have has a small fill using a small water bottle so have to refill twice a day which might get tedious, and I think the droplet size using the ultrasonic is better as far as root growth but I am just trying to use some old equipment I had collecting dust in the garage for now.

Not sure about apple cider vinegar.....perhaps anything that safely alters ph is fine.Ph 6.0
Foggers seem to get good reviews.
The consensus does seem though that higher temps not over 86 f with addition of clear rez is good.Got to have clear rez at temps over 70 though or you get slime.
Also everyone seems to agree with a low charge of bloom nutrients along with your hormone. They say one or the othr is ineffecttive alone. My hydro guy said dyna grow BLOOM is good for the nutes too .....1/4 strength or very weak.
Some of mine have drying leaves now,but terminals look good so still a viable crop. Some are good all the way yet.Could be light too close not sure.I will keep trying till I perfect this......lots of people are having success with these.

3 days......some are still very fine condition. If they lose a few bottom leaves,it should not be a problem as the auxiliary buds will pop open when rooting occurs.
These are most of the time in barely adequate humidity of 40%.
Next batch I will get a room humidifier to bring it near 60%.
Process of elimination. If I find a need to raise light,I will. This batch is definately to the extremes.Next batch will have mothers maintained with a proper 1:1 nitrogen to potassium ratio. That definately increased the rate of success on my pine cuttings to around 75-100% when was only 33% success.
These are exciting.

walla!

if u are curious...I am getting callousing at 5 days.Very encouraging given the harsh treatment of 40% humidity and really no prep of the mothers.Put everything in my small tent with added co2,as I read the extra photosynthesis helps...and going to increase humidity today with a cheap humidifier.
Took a few more cuttings to add.Glad the cutting is rooting even though leaves are desiccating.

Congratulations on the callousing. I decided to get an ultrasonic fogger, so one of my setups will be the ultrasonic and the other a clone king mister (might even throw in a USfogger into the mister as well)

There seems to be very little info about people having success with Japanese maple cuttings and areo/fogponics that I can find. Guess I will do an experiment with late spring soft cuttings and then autumn hard wood cuttings. I'm curious if the maples will respond better with hardwood even though the process will take longer. Yet the whole point of my little experiment here was to be able to clone fresh spring new growth.

My first guess was to try to replicate Japans environment as much as possible, but this is where it gets confusing. Most information here in the US says that maples dont like soggy roots and like to dry out between watering, but isn't it very humid in Japan? One of the biggest braintwisters I am having is how do JMs prefer dryer soil if their home climate is super humid?

Is cutting the leaf in half usually fine when people trim the leaves to give less strain on the plant, or would cutting 2/3rds off be better?

Its not just about the climate in japan though, its about the absolute best environment for the cuttings that matter. JM grow healthy a lot of places. My climate is no where near japans and i get great healthy growth.
I cant help with clones and all that, but I can keep you from getting trapped in the “japan climate” box because I also made that mistake.
