I have several Trident maples. One has not budded out yet and the other 2 have started. All were kept the same way over winter months. I scratched the bark and its green underneath. Is this a concern?

I had heard green means live on another board? is this normally tru

Green means it hasn't been dead for a while...it doesn't mean it will bud out. Once the cold has past, put the tree out in full sun, keep the soil moist, and keep your fingers crossed. Don't toss the tree until mid summer at the earliest.

I have an Arakawa and several Japanese Maples that held off this spring. There's no rhyme or reason to it, they all froze to 5F ect, bad winter for conainerized trees. I've done as dav recommended and my fingers are crossed.

I've had this before and can usually see a bit of shade difference between a lingering tree and one that's on it's way out. I guess you have to watch alot of trees to get an eye for it.
There's wet green and dry green and if it's still wet there's hope, but I find a better test is to check a bud and see if it's still green inside. Here's hoping they're just late bloomers, Rick

I have several tridents and the all do there own thing. They are like kids with different personalities. Just wait and don't worry as if they are dead you can't do anything about it. I have two sheila maples and one leafed out a month after the other one this year.

Maybe I should have gave more water during winter, I was always worried about root freeze

Every type of Maple we have including the large landscape started to push buds a long time ago when some were under 3 foot of snow. The buds seemed to have gone dormant and then yesterday they started to push a little more. I am certain they are all ok - it just has been a weird Winter and Spring so far.

I see a little green in a few buds, does this mean she will pull through?

I have some that are leafing like crazy, others with swollen buds and some showing little or no movement. That is normal.

Yep, there are a bunch of different types of Trident Maples too, so yours may not be identical cultivars. Some have more fissured bark, some have different sized leaves, some make finer branches than others and they all seem to bud out on their own time. I have at least 3-4 different types of Tridents now that I have identified. All growing right next to each other and there was a span of almost a month between leaf break among the different types.

If you see green tips, you should be golden.

These different cultivars, do you think they are like genetic mutations or something cultivated for certain properties ? The reason I ask is I have read where some species of trees will not have the same charecteristics unless they are cloned, even if grown from seeds of the parent tree. I assume by "cloned" they mean propagated from layers or cuttings.
