Our August Exhibition has a long history, going into its 43rd year in 2021. It is one of the largest regional shows in the nation. Centered on the Chicago Botanic Garden's Permanent Collection, featuring over 50 world-class trees, it’s a showplace of trees from across the Midwest and beyond. Enthusiasts from across the country bring their trees to be judged in the main hall at the Garden's Regenstein Center.

I have been waiting for this. First time but I will absolutely be going to check it out. Not sure what day though. Was thinking Sat. From prior shows does any day hold more value than the other?

Somewhere I have a photo of me and my pitiful bougainvillea at the MABA show there from about that time…around 1997-1998. Now I’ll have to go find it.
All I know is that it was before digital cameras :)

Check out the workshop schedule, and see if there is a workshop you are interested in. Saturday the vendors have more selection, Sunday the prices are better :)

I'd go to the show just to buy up a ton of Sara Rayner's pots. On the site they mention that she has been making bonsai pots for 16 years... LOL add at least a decade to that number!

I'm going Saturday/Sunday. My wife and I signed up for the Japanese Lilac workshop with Jim Beck, stupid question...we get to keep the trees we work on right?
Yes... you keep the trees. The cost of the material is included in the price of the workshop, which is why some workshops look much more expensive than others when in fact it is primarily due to the material being larger or more advanced.

I figured that was the case but wanted to make sure as that class only had a $35 material fee.

Trust me... once you attend a decent workshop you will understand why people spend money on workshops :) Consider it a direct investment in enjoying bonsai. I'm sure you'll have a great time!

Also... some nurseries provide workshop material at substantially reduced prices. I have gone to workshops that charged $100 for a pre-bonsai that I don't think you'd be able to buy for $400 retail.

CasAH,

Who is the potter you showed in first image in the third post today? Several nice pots there!
