One of the nursery staff at a nursery I go to apparently dropped this maple and it’s main branch snapped and it appears like it had fallen out of the pot disrupting the root system. They gave it to me for practically nothing. Funny thing was I was going to buy one they were a little Pricy but beautiful trees with great movement. My concern is the health of the tree and I feel like if I root prune and repot it into it’s training pot it will stress the tree out more. Any thoughts on a route to take with this is appreciated. Thanks

I looks like it has a lot of exposed roots. That is probably from the accident at the nursery. Repot it now before those roots dry out and die. Do do some root pruning, but try not to take off more than 50%. Pop it into a training pot, then let it grow for the year.
