I see you used the wedge cut method with your azalea, when repotting....

After years of repotting an azalea, do you ever really get all of the original soil out of the center of the rootball?

I'll be repotting 2 of mine next year, for the first time since the initial reduction...been pondering how exactly I'm gonna go about it...

I eventually do, I have several that are, as of this year, probably 95 percent clear. In addition to the wedges, I also remove a little from the bottom each year. I think it is impossible to get it all, but you can get close.

I really like this one! You've done a great job styling the raw material. I hope I'm able to "see the tree" like you veterans someday.

Where do you purchase pots like that? I'm not even sure what they are called :| I know azaleas prefer deeper so I'd like to purchase some pots like look like that style. I'm hoping to start with cheaper knockoffs and work my way up the real thing.

Thanks!

I found the pot on the .99 cent bonsai auction FB page, they come up from time to time on there.

Thanks for the update, John! I love your beauties. Until I joined Bnut some weeks ago, I never even knew that azaleas could be worked like that. Thanks to your inspiration, I have been driving my husband crazy by stopping at every nursery around town and checking for azaleas with promising trunks ;)
Around here, some nurseries offer azaleas that have many small plants planted all together in one 3 gal nursery can. Azaleas like that look just as nice as landscape plants but would not work for bonsai. Now DH knows to tip the pots to the side and say, "Look! Here's one with one trunk!"

Looking forward to more azalea porn from you! :D

@Mellow Mullet , how soon do you start feeding this one after repot?

I throw a couple of hand fulls of Osmacoat in while repotting, then I hit it with miracle grow when I fertilize the others. I think your question is how long do I wait, I have fertilized the next day after repotting, it does not hurt them. I have read where others wait a month or so because of fear of "root burn", I feel that is just hooey, another bonsai myth. The roots have not changed, they are only shorter.

I really don't fertilize as much as most do, just use the osmacoat and I give them miracle grow three or four times a year.

Hey @Mellow Mullet how'd this one do for you last year? I'm looking forward to seeing a spring update on it!

Here you go @pweifan, I thinned it out some and as soon as it has finished blooming I will trim a little more and wire it.

Update:

I usually don't trim my azaleas this this of year so I don't ruin the flowers, but this one has decided to put on a show now. So, I decided to give the once over. I still needs some further trimming, but I left most of the flower buds for flowers later.

yeah, yeah, the Azalea is nice. Well done. You have better vision than I would have (As I was thinking.. Chop the long branch). Good choice not to do what I would have done.

But more importantly.. What is the bare-bones plant you have in the background? Looks like that is off to a great future too?!?
