I have been growing bonsai since late summer 2010.I am liking the japanese black pine.My collection started with a 'Hayabusa' graft 2 year old.I just had to start my pinching technique,so I put it in a bonsai pot right away. Now I am understanding how they grow from that plant specifically. The tree,I still like it.It is in the brown, big pot.I will be removing all the long needles finally and it wil have small needles now.I am finding now that I want to grow JBP out in colanders,to let a leader grow wild and get bigger squat trunk pines while preserving final branches.I am excited cause' I am waiting for some new 2 year grafts in mail that I am going to put in 8" colanders to proceed with that.I bought 'kyokko yatsubusa','katsuga','shun sho matsu',and 'akame' cultivars.I am definately going to let grow out several years.
I have kept 5 JBP from seed I grew and planted straight away in small brown pot's,you can see them up on front shelf.I am enjoying that method too.My goal is to keep them small and just dwarf them.I had kept the other 5 JBP from seed in the double colander method, you can see them on the back shelf. They seem to be thriving.I am going to wire them down to bring some low shape to them soon.
The 'kyokko' that I hastily planted in the grey pot last year on the left is now planted in a colander cause' I noticed some low buds that would make great new leaders for the squat cut -down method.
So,I guess you have to start somewhere with JBP.I only wish I had room for more. All together I will have 10 pines in colanders growing out.It will be interesting to see how my little learning 'hayabusa' pine will turn out over the next few years, since I started training it right away.I kinda' have an idea what it will look like.

Hayabusa is a fantastic cultivar. I had a brocade (same thing from what I've seen) and it was a fast barker-upper. Then it died suddenly in about 2 weeks this spring. Needles got speckled, then it was fried in about a week, all at once. No idea what happened, but looked fungal. I'm going to go for another one this winter.

BTW, if you haven't, you might want to reduce those shoots down to a pair on each terminal, or it's going to form knuckles.

Sorry to hear about your Brocade. Thanks for the advice also.I go to Longwood Gardens and look at their black pine to give me a bit of help with wiring.Their tree is considerably larger, but I can see how they wired it,Thanks again. Here is Longwood Garden's JBP.
