I’m ground growing a black mulberry that is doing really well here in CA. It has some potential. I am planning on digging it up and taking it with me to MT. My plan is to be in MT in a few months. Huge temperature changes. 50-60s at night now to single digits degrees F.

Would you dig it up and get it recovered ASAP in a pot now? Would you do the normal really coarse medium like pumice or other bonsai sub or would you go with a good potting soil? Thinking aloud here as a potting soil would give more insulation verses roots expanding into a coarse mix where they would be more susceptible to the cold.

50s and 60s at night is nearly summer temperature over here. I don't think the tree would have any freeze tolerance at all right now so that shouldn't be a factor in what mix you use. Can you board it in CA somehow or limp it along until spring under grow lights?
