Moss top dressing and aeration

I recently applied a moss top dressing when I repotted my Japanese maple. I shredded sphagnum and a local moss I found. Soaked it then applied the paste. The tree is in pine bark and akadama.

It seems that this dressing may be impeding aeration. Should I leave some space around the trunk to allow for more air exchange?

That might be a bit overboard for the common practice of adding a thin layer of sphagnum moss, just enough to slow surface evaporation of a newly- potted tree; like this:
