Has anyone ever used Mountain Laurel as bonsai? Or are the flowers just too big? And do they even backbud at all? Thanks for your input.

Jerry Stowell, a pioneer bonsai guy in the Mid-Atlantic and first president of the American Bonsai Society, used them back in the 70's.

He included information on laurel in his book. He concluded, if I remember correctly, they're not a terrific species, but workable. I haven't tried one.

I have one that is still in the growing out stage, but it has backbudded for me without any heavy pruning. So... that doesn't mean that it will respond well when I make the move to prune back heavily, but at the moment, it has responded well to anything light.

Let me know what happens when you do prune it back hard. Thanks!
