After being in bonsai for approaching 4 years, naturally I've been exposed to suiseki. I've always collected stones and rocks in the past but never thought of them as anything special.

I dug out an old rock that was given to me by my dad. Many years ago he went backpacking to Devils Postpile national monument and somewhere along the route he picked up this stone.

I took a good look at it today and realized it had a lot of character and good attributes for suiseki. There are a lot of smoky quartz regions and iron oxide deposits that give it a lot of contrast. The bottom is naturally flat and the shape is undoubtedly of that of a mountain. It's a small stone that fits in the palm of your hand, but very cool nonetheless.

I made the daiza for it too, completely hand carved. I think it turned out pretty well for my first daiza and lacking proper tools. The wood was too thick and I didn't have chisel or saw to cut it width wise. I used a butter knife and hammer to split the wood, then planed it with a knife. To clean up the edges and thin it down I used sandpaper. It was a fun project and took lots of elbow grease.
