It is a fantastic tree but I think I liked it better before it was moved into a more upright position.

To me the deadwood told a more compelling story in this position.

What made you decide to stand the tree more upright?

In 1985 this tree was collected in a German bog. It now is 34 years in training as bonsai. If one looks at the pictures it is amazing what kind of change happened. In 1997 at the Ginkgo Award (which was what the Trophy is today) it came in second - one could say second best bonsai in Europe. After this it was exhibited just about everywhere in Central Europe and won many awards. In 2017 a big change in design happened. And then in the winter of 2018/19 the catastrophe. The trunk broke under four feet of heavy snow. But it was still alive. In July Thomas and I decided to rescue what was left. And here we are. Not so bad for a tree which had been given up already. The final picture is a virtual, of course, with a new position in a new pot.

That is the best bonsai story I have ever heard. A story of catastrophe, of course - but the tree’s refusal to give up and determination to keep going is truly inspiring. And what you’ve turned it into now is inspiring, too.

Incredible.
