Ok I gave up on this air layer and I was about to remove the foil and sphagnum. From what I've read, it can take up to 2 years to take. Mr. Muranaka did it in 6 months with only new growth. This air layer was done last fall, with growth thats atleast 3 years old maybe more. Check out those beauties. Now I may have to make more air layers for next year.

So what should my next step be? How much roots should be seen before the air layer is cut from the parent?

This was the thread from april.http://bonsainut.com/forums/showthread.php?10861-From-what-I-ve-read-after-I-air-layered-This-wont-root-Oh-yea-Identification-please

I'd let it grow, wait till winter then get some decent soil around them. Separate
The following winter. Now that its worked you need to do this with a branch
Or
/ trunk section that has something interesting going on!
