As I convert Mugo nursery material into bonsai in training I'm finding that I am left with what can best be described as a "stovepipe emerging from a knot" after reducing a tree down to a single trunk line. I'll do what I can to encourage sacrifice branches in the transition area where the branch/new leader emerges from the base section to help but will the constricted look to that area of the trunk diminish naturally over time?
