Was it the winter or you cut to much off?
I think it was winter, repeated Freeze and Thaw cycles.....I lost several trees over this past winter. The only common denominator is that they were freezing solid and thawing out frequently.
This was my first winter in my new place, gonna take extra precautions next winter.

If it's still green, there's still hope. I've got one just starting to throw a few nubs from a ferocious cut back. So they may start growing a little later

Yep.
Northern Carroll County now.
And on sunny high ground rather than the lowest shady ground in the area....
I got an azalea last fall to play with. I mulched it against the house , and it did fine. I actually forgot about it and never watered it dec-March .
