A couple shots of a Japanese maple I picked up earlier in the season. It really needs a repotting, but seems to be doing very well.

Are the brown tips on the leaves caused by too much sun?

Quite the growth spurt going on! I really need to repot this guy, but it's probably too late in the season.

Likely that tree would be just fine left in that pot for as long as a couple more years. It is just that the roots will have become a bit of an ugly mess by then. So, not to worry; but it would be a good idea to get it into a wider container of substrate next year and start developing the nebari and root pad along with continuing to develop its trunk line.

It ought to make into a very nice bonsai

Mine too have really taken off in the couple of weeks. They seem to like the hot days with the cooler night's. Nice tree!

Exactly my plan. I'm just going to let it grow wild for a year or two. The soil it's in is very compacted and doesn't seem to absorb water well, which is why I wanted to repot it sooner than later, but it seems healthy enough to wait 'till spring.
