So this is a tree that I've had now for about a year and a half. Bought it as a clearance tree at one of the big box stores. It was balled and burlap so I took it out of the pot, took off the burlap, and removed as much of the clay around the roots as I felt comfortable with. Then back in the same pot with a tree mix that was heavy on the bark for good drainage. I probably removed 50% of the foliage on the initial pruning, and then wired all the branches down. It grew quite a bit and I had to remove the wire because it was starting to cut in but the branches all held pretty good. I've been pinching new elongating shoots to work the profile down a bit and trying to open it up a little without taking off something I might regret later. At 3ft tall it's my tallest but I like it. Trying to find something to plant it into is going to be the first thing I need to do so that I can transplant next spring. Sorry about the crappy background in the pictures, that pot weighs a lot and I didn't want to move it. Ha. So I decided that it was time to get this guy out of the nursery pot and into a more suitable container. Lots of good roots, I was a little careful when combing it out and was able to keep the root loss to a minimum. All in all I think the re-pot went well and I feel good about it.IMG_20240330_132407321_HDR~2.jpgIMG_20240330_124813031_HDR~2.jpgIMG_20240330_124527710_HDR~2.jpgIMG_20240330_124511764_HDR~2.jpg

Very nice!

My Hinoki also has a swollen base. Height is 3’ and in an Anderson Flat.

Yeah, that graft is common on nursery stock Hinoki. I might try to ground layer later, but for now I'll just live with it. It is one of my favorite trees even with the ugly graft bulge. After all, we all have our imperfections.

Well said and that’s a good attitude. I agree!

I like to say bonsai is all about imperfect perfection! (or is it imperfect perfection? haha)
