I just picked up this fellow over the weekend. Had some nice color to it. The trunk looks more decent than I had imagined. After some work on it, No. 2 went into the ground. Please enjoy and comment. I could always use some advice.
I could be wrong but root work as you have done on a Japanese Quince is not critical and to expect a perfect rootage on one might lead you to the nuthouse as you will be fighting an uphill battle. They grow soo slow that it seams that a clump style is mainly the way to go. Looks good though
After looking at the photos from the other post and thinking about how these quince fuse, I thought that there was room for improvement on the base and roots and now is the time to start.
I decided to mess with TN no.2 one last time this year. Little suckers that grew from the roots of another Toyo Nishiki were added. They were placed where space was found close to the main trunk.
Nice looking quince start. It's got an interesting base already.
I agree with Nathanbs on the root work. I decided myself just a few months back that I'm going to stop doing that type of root work on quince. I'll continue to do it on my maples and such but with quince it really slows the plant down and I don't think you really ever end up with a true base flare. I've been paying close attention to my quince repots for a couple years now and finally decided to stop messing with them so much.
Good luck with it and keep us posted!
