So, was this like a competition where you got an untrained piece of material and had a certain amount of time to work on it?

Your tree is interesting... Honestly it kind of reminds me of a spider from one of your scrolls!! Lol

Very nice and thanks for sharing! Also it must have been tough doing this while having so many other things on your mind. I admire your determination. Nicely done and a very good beginning for this juniper.

As you progress with it, I would consider shortening and/or editing some of the jins specially because they are so thin.

Nice tree. You did really well. :)

I believe he mentioned on the other thread that the trees were auctioned off.

Stacy, it was great meeting you and I'm really glad you took an original approach to the styling and design of the tree. Hope you had fun and had a smooth trip back.

We're getting hit with frost on the nights following the event.

Yes, they were pre-bonsai material from Plant City Bonsai, which I believe is located
in Georgia, someone feel free to correct me if I am wrong...
They were about 99 % adult foliage and there was a lot to work with.
Very nice material !!!

Some innocent questions...

How long did you have?
Were people hovering over you as you worked?
Were you on a stage?
Why did you leave so many long jins?
I am glad you didn't have to kill it and force it into a pot did they provide the moss?
Any rules?

Thanks I have never seen a head to head bonsai competition.

As far as the jins...

In my other thread, the link I posted in the first post here, if
this makes any sense... :)

I described unfortunately that my head wasn't really in the
competition... I spent the whole 1st half of the competition mostly
on the phone, which really put me behind...

I wired the jins out with the intention of reducing them down before
I was done, I wanted to see how the rest of the tree was going to turn
out, so I could see where to cut...

In the end I really never did get to wire much of the foliage and put it
where I wanted it to go... You can see by the pic, that only a couple of
the branches on the right side are even wire... And with about less than
an hour to go, I decided that the only chance I possibly had of winning
was to just go with more of an artsy, creative styled tree... So I left them
long...

Seeing that the whole prize was to give money to someone to go study
and learn how to better their art from an approved Bonsai teacher...
I thought perhaps they might see past all the errors of my tree, and
instead see the possible potential and uniqueness that my tree brought to the
table...

Sadly... it didn't pay off... but, hey shit happens... :)
The tree that won looked like the tree that won last year and the year before...
Not trying to talk crap about it, I think the judges just were looking for a
different kinda tree that's all. :)

You as well !!! I had loads of fun and met some really awesome folks...
I got invited up next May to the National Arboretum to be a vendor...
If it doesn't conflict with our annual Florida Convention, I might make the
trip up !!! So hopefully I might be able to see you if you come, not sure how
far that is from you, and perhaps see some other familiar faces !!!
:)

Thanks I have never seen a head to head bonsai competition.
The competition started at 8 in the morning and ended at 5 in the afternoon...
You were allowed to come and go at will. There were people coming and going
all day observing, with one rule that they were not allowed to give advice, for
this could disqualify a contestant.

We were not on stage, just in a workshop type room.

Oh... The jins...
I left them long to give folks something to talk about :)
And boy was there ever talk !!!

I provided the moss, I brought the moss all the way form Florida !!!
I knew no one else would of thought of it !!! and in fact no one did, untill mine was
seen, and all of a sudden moss appeared on another tree :rolleyes::rolleyes:

Any Rules ???
Yes!!! Clearly don't use Aluminum wire !!!
Everyone else in the competition was from the Northeast, and they all had Copper
wire... which obviously looks so much better !!! I unfortunately being from Florida
don't use the stuff, for one reason and one reason only... Our trees grow so fast
here, that in less than 2 months later we are already taking it back off !!! Would be
way to expensive to go through copper that fast !!!

Besides my Jins being to long... The next major talking point was that there was to
much wire on the tree and it was distracting... No one else wired a jin but me...
I wanted to make sure that when the wood dried out and the wire could be taken
off, in a couple of days, that they stayed where I put them...
:)

Just looked at the pic of my tree again,
and noticed that the bottom far left jin
had a lot more movement in it...

I think along the lines someone help straighten
it out for me a bit
There was some heated discusions in front of my
tree, over where the jins should of stopped !!!
:)

Sawgrass,

My understanding is that the winner was from Charlotte, NC., not the Northeast.
