Judy, I used one of Grahm Potter's "terrier" carving tools on this. Wow! It really cuts wood quickly. And it gets all over you!

I probably should have taken a blow torch to it to burn off the sharp edges. I wanted to see how it weathered first.
Get a smaller tool for the detail stuff, I use a dremel with the engraving attachment. You can work in much tighter spots, and since it's a bit slower, you can really see what you're doing before you go too far. There are good bits for these very much like the terrier as well as smaller router type bits.

Very nice! Umes in bloom always help dispel winter gloom and get me ready for spring. I'm looking forward to seeing it in person tomorrow!

Did you try it reversed, with the Ume on the right?

That thought crossed my mind as well, but upon further inspection The ume seems to be reaching to the juniper that is gracefully bowing to a beautiful lady in pink.

If reversed, the juniper would have it's back turned to a hunk of wood hiding a beautiful seductress...?

If so, perhaps he's just upset the he will have to try another night? Or there's a love stand off ??

Perhaps I've had one too many stouts...

That said,
Wouldn't change a thing, well done Adair!

Spirit, whatever you said, I agree! I also changed the accent plant after I took the photo. I'll post the new one in the morning.

love stand off ??

The way it stands.....to me.....

Looks like both of them are turning away from that bastard accent.

Should have aborted it.

I'd like to see the other view too.

And if I may be so critical.....

I like the height of the stand......

But it is attracting too much attention.

Great tree Adair! Wondeful display as well. I agree with Judy. The only thing that catches my eye is the man-made look of the deadwood. But I know you're working on it :) When you get more courage, dig deep and make some nice depressions on that wood for more drama!

Not sure how well it would work for bonsai, but we used wire brush wheels and sand blasting to age carved deadwood.
We also used termites and a modified cattle prod. (Lightning strike details)
