It seems to be the time of year for these around here.

I impulse bought this little one about a week ago while walking home from brunch. It was in a flower shop for $15.

Why I like it:
  • I wanted a Myrtle
  • The lowest part of the trunk has a bit of movement and could be interesting
What I don't like:
  • Too thin for it's height
  • Pom-pom foliage ball
My plan:
  • Air layer at the red box
  • Make two mame/shohin

I found this one at a garden centre yesterday. $27, and a much thicker trunk.

Why I like it:
  • Nice hefty trunk, for a myrtle
  • lowest part of the trunk has a swoop/curve going on
  • Might be good for 3 smaller trees
What I don't like:
  • Trunk height/thickness ratio is off
  • Big pom-pom too high up
  • Middle section of trunk has some ugly pruning scars IMG_1270.JPG IMG_1273.JPG
Plans:
  • Air layer at the red box
  • After the air layer comes off, chop at the red line to eliminate the nasty section
  • Grow it out into a shohin slanting/informal upright.
  • Remove the moss in the pot and see if it will grow in it's own pot for possible later use
I'm going to do the layer on the smaller tree first as a test. If it goes well, I'll do the larger one.

View attachment 155512it's budding back... in one spot. Should I be removing all but one or two?

Let's see what the others say but my instinct would be to let it regain some strength after that chop. That said I am so happy to see this! It gives me some boldness to attack one that I have. I've never had great luck once I started messing with them but this one has been growing like crazy blooming and fruiting so I have just let it grow wild.
