I am sorry I miss the show this year. I usually go every year. Nanpu-Kai is a very prestigious club! You have to have many good bonsais and member recommendations before being accepted into it. Congratulation to you Peter for being a member. I would love to join this club one of these day.

One thing I don't like about the Nanpu-Kai Bonsai show is that the trees tend to be repeats. I don't know why people keep showing the same trees year after year when you know they are all masters and have hundreds of world-class trees in their yards. I hope the show had more "new" trees this year. John Naka's trees are always worth seeing again though, no matter which one. The Community center that the show is in is also perfect for a bonsai show too. It's an art gallery!

One thing I also liked about the show is actually the Nisei Festival Week surrounding it. There's a lot of shows and foods and people to watch. It is the best time to be in Little Tokyo.

OK, hurry up with the pictures!
Si

To us this is a yearly tradition, a family visit (with wife and kids) to Little Tokyo during the Nisei festival. My kids love it too, they get to eat lots of "shaved ice".

I thought that this year's show was one of the better ones. There were a few new trees, one was a very impressive olive stump shaped into a grove, by Leila Kusumi. She has never shown it before.
Also, it is the first time that I've seen Sheryl Manning's bunjin silverberry. It is a giant, and it is a stunningly good example of literati. I hope it lives for a long time in spite its fragile frame.

Congrats to Peter, as a new member. I had a chat with Ted Matson, trying to figure out how to grow a nebari on your oak. We came to the conclusion that you need to plant it back in the ground for 3 years. Otherwise you will have to live another 100 years.:)

If I learn how to download the pictures from my new camcorder, I may post some pictures one day.

I just realized that Harry's california juniper needs a serious re-design. The deadwood is the best in the world, but the crown looks like a perfect mushroom growing on the edge of a cliff. Peter, you need to talk to Harry and offer him to re-wire that top. He is too old to do that stuff anymore.

The tamarix one is so cool! I love it, too (the fact I like it doesn't mean because it belongs to my teacher, Mr. Richard Ota, who is an expert in tamarix, satsuki and JBP). Bonhe
