There have been a number of posts regarding this national treasure, but having dreamed of visiting since I first became interested in bonsai, I can't help but want to post more photos of my time there. I guess it is kind of like looking at any great piece of art, it demands more than one viewing.

For those that have never been, the museum is located in the National Arboritum. If you take public transportation, you can get there from the National Mall in about thirty or forty minutes using the metro and the local bus system.

I hope to post photos over the next couple of days. I thought I would start with an overall view of the museum. It has three major parts: Chinese, Japanese and American Pavillions. These are photos of the entrance to the museum and the large courtyard.

The Courtyards

Two photos of each Courtyard:
The Chinese, which is a double entrance; and the Japanese Pavillion which is a meandering path through a garden. The tree in front of the Japense Pavillion is an impressive crabapple.

The entrance to the American Pavillon is the simplist of the three with a prominent view of John Naka's "Goshin" as you enter. The curator, Jack Sustic, claimed that if a photo of Goshin were shown anywhere around the world, most serious bonsai enthusiasts would know it. There is also a nice tribute to Naka which I will display in a later posting.

Was this a recent visit Jeff?

I was there back in April and was very impressed with the condition of the trees. Especially the junipers and the pines.

Thanks for taking the time to post.

Regards,
Paul
