Recently, there was a where Chris from Telperion discussed in depth his nebari development. I can't find the thread, or even Chris' name here, so did anyone bookmark this by chance?

Great thread, thanks for finding it Garywood Maybe we should have a thread of the week forum, where the best old threads are brought forward to read again!

If you have ever bought one of his trees you will know he is an expert in nebari development.

That is a very interesting thread. Great idea to bring back threads loaded with info like that.

Thank you for finding that thread. I've been struggling a bit with this very topic myself.

Judy thay is a great idea. Would help to give the newer people some great info and perhaps remind the more advanced people about some things. Might even open up some other discussion.

So here is my biggest issue/question regarding nebari development.

The technique shown in that thread and others I've seen give info on how to develop nebari on small trees, seedlings, cuttings etc.

How does one do it on a 2,3,4,+ inch diameter trunk? Is it/can it be done at all or are you just stuck with not being able to do it on so large a tree? I've got a pine with a 3 inch diameteer trunk that Id like to get nebari on.
I suppose I could take a cutting and try thread grafting like they do with maples but I've no idea if tha could even work?

Paradox, some species are easier to use these techniques. Ones with vigorous root systems that easily "re-root". Unfortunately, pines generally aren't one of these and working with larger trunks would eliminate these techniques but there are several grafting techniques to enhance the base and roots. Grafting is the most widely used and is very effective but using the right grafting technique in the right place makes a big difference. This is very general and without seeing a photo it would be hard to say which grafting technique would best serve the tree.

Thanks Gary.

At some point, Ill resurrect the thread for that pine for discussion

Thanks Gary.

At some point, Ill resurrect the thread for that pine for discussion

Please do Paradox. I too have a larger tree or two I could use some help on getting better nebari, one's a bald cypress which should be a good candidate for this, I just haven't ever grafted before. Maybe start a thread called "Nebari Dev. for Large Trees"? ;)

Its dark outside when I get home now :(
Tomorrow (Saturday), when its light out, Ill get a closeup picture of the base of the trunk and resurrect the thread.

I also need to get a pic of another tree for another thread anyway so Ill do that at the same time.
