Need help deciding what to do next JBP

As for the style, I am considering either an informal upright, or slant style, illustrated with the pot at an angle. Any opinions on what would be best for this material.

Also, what recommendations are there on whether i should repot first and let rest for a season either fall or spring, or let it remain in the existing pot and do some structural pruning and wiring and let rest for a season.

I know that i shouldn't do both within the same year. Just not sure on what sequence I should take.

Thank you for any input!

By the way i live in western washington, and this is a Japanese Black pine currently growing in a nursery pot with good bonsai soil.

Good news is at this time of year, you don't want to do ANYTHING :)

Check out this black pine resource for a series of great articles about black pine seasonal care and energy balancing.

Additionally, Brian VF has some great posts about seasonal black pine care for you to check out.

If it were my tree, I would probably select buds and clean up old needles in the Fall, then repot in the early Spring into a larger, flat container to get the roots growing horizontally. Best time to repot in Spring is when the tree is just waking up from winter dormancy.

I bought the tree from bonsai nw in Tukwila wa. The trunk was wired as it grew to add movement.

Was that a response to this......?
Please Explain..

If so...I am more confused!

Let me explain....

I never seen a tree in a nursery pot with good bonsai soil...
From a nursery, bonsai or otherwise...

Bonsai soil thrown on top.....sure...

But all the way thru?

I would expect them to have thrown it in a flat tray at least...
Not back into a nursery pot.
If changing soil.

Just be sure what you're working with!

You need to go to more bonsai retailers. Practices vary.

Or stick to my Highly reputable one!:p

Unless being trained for root over rock...
It shouldn't have been replanted into a nursery pot...

Or there to begin with...

IMO!

I don't recall (name your chosen black pine guy)
Who uses nursery pots....

Not BVF not ES not you not ...who got mad ones in the desert? Not them.not smoke not .....

It's just odd...

This one has nice movement and looks healthy. I would follow what Bnut outlined. Am not so sure if you would be using all that trunk though as it look to be too long and no taper. I may consider picking one of the branch from the first whorl to be a new trunk section... that will give me a more compact tree and taper. I have a few that has similar trunk that I consider reducing further to get taper and smaller.

Brent does. I don't know what soil he uses. I know a guy who has hundreds of cork bark JBP in black plastic pots. And in bonsai soil.

I'm not a propagator, but many will use cheap plastic pots. George Muranaka used to repot his ground grown JBP into plastic pots to sell them.
