Good point. And I think there is too many roots and too few soil. It's difficult to achieve balanced soil humidity by watering as thumblessprimate1 has already mentioned and I agree with CWTurner, this guy needs repotting.

Noone has pointed out one important detail- is there a draft entering the window? Ficus do not like air drafts, and cold is not good for them. They want hot and moist. Maybe it would like your bathroom if its got a window. As long as no cold drafts hit it, the moist air may help. Tchūs.

Drafty conditions are the least of the problems here. First, it's one of these ridiculous "Ginseng" figs, basically useless. Yea, yea, this guy did this, this guy did that....lottsa' work for little reward. Look at the "soil", this thing has been neglected from the moment it was put in it's container. Figs can handle into the forties fahrenheight, if you have that kind of draft, fix your house!! Sounds harsh, for that, my apologies.....some simple research before buying is the best idea.

Personally, I would throw this out your drafty window, fix the window and do some research on plants that lend themselves to indoor container growing.....then drink a bunch of Warstieners!!!:D

Yes, but unfortunately this is what they are usually sold planted in. That's why I always tell myself to buy trees in the spring, followed by repotting to bonsai soil.

But this is a tropical plant, emergency repotting can be done all year round and the spring is behind the door. The best chance to improve its state, I think.

Just google how to repot bonsai, if it's your first repotting. Nothing difficult, but everything is once for the first time.

Hello there! First of all I would like to thank you everybody for your tips :) and I also have an update on the tree.

I went to a bonsai shop here in Berlin, and ask for some advice there as well. The guy end up repotting it itself, getting rid of some dead branches and applying some cut paste ( if I'm not mistaking ). He used akadama for the soil and told me that the tree wasn't yet dead since there were some green buds. Also notice that the trunk has shrink considerably. I was also probably watering not enough so I decided now to water every 2 days or so and fertilise every 2 weeks. I've also read that would be a good idea to dive the tree in water for a couple of hours to really get the water inside the tree. Tell me guys what your insights are please. :)20160426_121115.jpg 20160426_121105.jpg 20160426_121046.jpg 20160426_121036.jpg 20160426_121011.jpg

Good bonsai shop that you've found. I hope you were looking at the repotting procedure. I think it'll restart growing soon if any other mistake is avoided.

The pot is kinda full (piled on top, almost falling out) but it's nice and draining soil, looks good.

Hopefully it does :) I'm also a bit worried about the placement. When I look closely at the tree I start feeling quite hot when the sun is shinning. Even though it's 7 degrees Celsius outside I wonder if it's too hot for the tree, due to its proximity to the window.

Hello everyone :) I'm coming with another update on the ficus. I'm happy to say that it finally recovered after so much trying :). I've changed the placement to the kitchen, where it does not get direct sun through the window but indirect light and not close to the window. The trunk has go back to be robust and we have new leaves also :).

Until I opened the thread I thought that Ian had joined us. Your avatar is quite iconic...

Can't go to that page here, something wrong with the SSL settings, perhaps fix it to get more visits.
It's not my site, it's Bonsai Eejit. Google it. He's in Ireland, putting him a lot closer to you than he is to me:
