There's an expected cold front next tues-thurs with highs of mid 40's, but lows of 32F. Mix of hail/snow. Do my tree's need protecting from this early cold blast? I'm thinking not weather wise, but possible with this hail/snow? I haven't set up my hoop house yet.

Thanks
Chris

hail or heavy snow could damage fine twigs. Very Cold wind lor cold wind for extended periods also can damage twigs. Dieback would be the result of wind damage. "Blunt force trauma" could be the result of heavy hail or heavy snow. can you put up some folding tables over the trees? Anything that can prevent direct contact from falling precipitation would work.

Chances are that the "hail" you're referring to is really graupel, sometimes called soft hail. It's not formed the same way as true hail, is much softer, and is not likely to do any damage to your trees. See, for example, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Graupel

I would think if you have a hoop house why would you not use it... Just me or

This year my trees will get a not so nice looking setup as the new place has a fence in disrepair. For this Winter it is going to be Hardwood stakes and burlap for the Agway - talk about a "rough" look :p In Spring though just prior to the contractor putting up a cedar 6 foot enclosure I will gut the landscape and incorporate a shade cloth system I have been working on for next season - if I do it proper the plants won't need to be moved except tropicals indoors which will have their own room. This year is going to be ugly but oh well

Whatever works Grim...whatever works lol Sorry I just bought such a small one, 6'x10', then again, not much room for more. It's going to be pretty compacted in there this yr. I may need to make some temp. enclosure like you mentioned if I run out of room. But someone posted here about using those pink insul foam boards to line his shed. What a great idea! So I'm going to try that this yr instead of cardboard boxes. I just may be able to keep above freezing all winter long.
