Just acquired this nice little Conocarpus erectus a.k.a. buttonwood from Wigerts out of Florida. Looking forward to seeing how it develops over the coming years. Nice bit of natural deadwood already. Might make a good Shohin with a little work and the right pot.

Lol, I'm just messing with you. All in fun.
Good luck with your buttonwood, I've seen some nice ones here at the DC Arboretum and online as well.

Can be a very finicky species out of its native habitat, but so worth it if you can get some good natural deadwood going on one. I'm partial to the more rugged looking stuff that isn't quite so manicured & manipulated..so buttonwood certainly fits that bill. Only time will tell with this little guy.

Like this collected Black sage I acquired. Something about its look of struggle just appeals to me. I can stare at this thing for hours.

Pulled off the plastic & took some good shots of the nebari. Needs to be brushed up..so I'll add that to my weekend to do list.

How much did you pay, if you don’t mind me asking? I want one but the nursery closest to me is usually way overpriced so I don’t wanna go in blind and get ripped off. Lol

I get most of mine from Wigerts & Andrea is pretty fair. A lot of theirs are wild collected, some are from cuttings. This one I got off eBay for around $38 plus $25 shipping. I've gotten some much bigger ones directly that I paid over $250 + shipping. I'm really into deadwood & carving so these are great to work on.

I’m going to check out Wigerts, I should drive there one day. I’ll have to convince the Mrs. that it would be fun to go to ft. Myers. Lol

I live in the Dallas area & plan on going to see their amazing selection. Show your wife this video & if she is not impressed & interested in seeing more..it may be a lost cause. My wife was fascinated & agreed to visit.

Ask next time if they have the smaller, finer leaf variety.
Wood us very easy to rot, needs the salt.

Fortunately, the mature bark is very impressive.
Good Day

It's not really a craze, unless you are maybe speaking strictly in the US & I would still be inclined to disagree. I've worked with them over 20 yrs. I lived in the Middle East for a few years & it was abundant there. China which is the origin of bonsai would also disagree. What's not to like? Great nebari, one of the best, if not THE best flowers available, easy to grow, drought tolerate, pest resistant. Perhaps branch ramifications are difficult, but that's on many species. To each his own. I guess we could start a thread about what types of bonsai styles and species of trees we loathe, but then again that's a contradiction to the art of bonsai itself. Anyway..my 2 cents.

The expletive didn't offend me..nor was I offended by your post..or take it to be rude. I was just trying to defend the desert rose.

Amen!

I think I hate em cuz finding/making a good Nebari is quite difficult, and they seem a cheat! Flowers too!

Not sure how it's a cheat. A Phoenix graft is a cheat. They grow great nabari quite good & fast if treated right. I have two that I'm working on now that I put in oversized pots so that I can work with the roots to get good bases going. I'll keep slowly lifting them up & out of the soil as they ramify.
