I recently picked up a few starter plants (mail order). The zelkova has an issue that I'm not sure how to handle. I'm assuming these roots will lead to problems down the road (reverse taper maybe???). Any advise would be appreciated.

Down the road?? Maybe?? Looks like it already has reverse taper.
I would also layer this at the bend or just above - wherever the thickest part is. Good radial roots are very important for zelkova bonsai and this one is still young enough to respond really quick and well.

What they said. Airlayer, they are easy species to do this to, next season though, not now.

Although not knowing where you are.... maybe now is your growing season. Please put your location in your profile so we know and can give you good advice for your climate.

Looks like an alien reaching down to gather test samples of the planet earth. Two eyes up front, two arms and a helmet in the back. Alien soil samplers wear grey helmets....that was a good clue.
