With the success I had on my grow bed, I decided to extend the bed another 15 ft. With this bed I should have room to plant the BCs and Mayhaw I will collect in the spring. The bed was built with hurricane salvaged material. Bottom was lined with shingles. Sides was built with salvaged flooring. Draining layer is sand from flood control sand bags.

CR, be careful of the sand. No way of knowing if it came from a beach somewhere, and therefore may contain salt.

I used a bunch of it in the other beds so I know the sand is OK. Plus around here we usually collect river sand in the sand bars and deposit it at the beach to make up for beach erosion. We don’t take sand from the beach.

Great. We're closer to the Gulf and I've been told our sand bag sand comes from beaches.

To save time I put about a dozen of collected Mayhaw in a 4' x 8' x 10" garden bed. The soil is loamy and loose. In the past it was really easy to pull up anything I planted in there with roots intact. I only have to shakes them a few times and all the soil will fall off leaving the bare roots. So far the collected Mayhaws that I put in the bed are growing really well. My plan is to pull them up when they have enough roots but the roots are not so long that they weave into one another. I figure that will be about 6 months. That will put the timing about mid-spring next year.

Doing things this way makes it much easier to tend to the collected trees. Due to timing, I don't want to set up intricate watering system for many trees in pots since I will move soon. What do you guys think?

3” layer of sand, 3” layer of top soil then all my still tender collected trees in baskets were laid in and mulched for winter protection.
