I just potted my Mendocino Pygmy cypress in this amazing pot by Randy Hoshaw. The rugged pot reinforces my attempt to style the tree with a feeling of the California coastal cypresses.
Nice work, Paul. Is this a Bob Shimon tree? I have been interested in one of these but have heard lots of horror stories from REBS members about their survival rates (aka mortality rates)
It is. But I bought it from a club member who has had it in good soil for over 10 years. It is supposedly one of the first that Bob sold. I have killed two before this transitioning them from the crappy native soil (cement) that they are collected in to good bonsai soil . This one I'm not worried about. It has a great mat of established roots. I re-styled it last year from an ordinary informal upright to the wind influenced style it is now.
