I've been back in the US now about a year, and am still in the process of putting my life back together professionally, personally, and financially ... and - as part of that process - having recently bought a multi-region BluRay player - I started watching this evening old DVDs I managed to bring back with me, this evening watching again - after a long hiatus - one of my all-time favorite movies, the wonderful Japanese movie, "Departures". Among the many things that caught my attention in this viewing was the fact that the wood of the Hinoki Cypress - a species that grows very well here, and one that I have always admired and loved cultivating - is a top-of-the-line, much-desired wood used in coffins in Japan. I would never have thunk it! BTW, an endearing movie you will never forget if you are lucky enough to watch it!

Hinoki is great wood. Also popularly used for sake cups, cutting boards, etc. Great trees, but a pain in the ass to properly maintain.
