I purchased this JM last year from Facebook, but the vendor didn't know the variety. It's starting to leaf out now, and I notice that some leaves are green, while others are red. I don't know if they start out green and turn red once they leaf out, or vice versa. Any ideas on variety?

I have a bloodgood, and they start out red right off the bat, and a couple of Kashimas that don't do this either.

Mature leaves are variegated. So it could be a variety named {something} nishiki. Of course there are lots more variegated varieties; I can rule out Butterfly, Higasayama, Peaches and Cream. The red new growth is distinctive. Bear in mind, there is no guarantee that it is a named variety, especially given its providence.

You may get better help on the UBC Maple Forum. If you are going to do this Japanese maple thing, though, you really should invest in a copy of the Vertrees book.

It's not variegated. It seems as if the leaves turn color right after emerging.
Thanks for the tip on the book. Just ordered one.
