Picked up this JPB from Hiro Matsuda here in NorCal. He said he grew it from seed and roots have been worked its whole life. I am fairly new to bonsai but have a good bit of experience in horticulture. I think I may sign up for one of Jonas’ classes next month and bring it there. Just thought I would post it here and see what more experienced people see for what direction I should take stylistically. I would like to keep the tree taller.

I like it. I have trouble styling trees from photos. You are making the correct call, bring it to a class with Jonas, he is one of a small handful of teachers who is quite skilled at JBP. And he is close enough to you that he knows your climate. He can help you with the most important thing. WHEN to do what.

Nice. It looks like you’ve got a nice trunk there with a nicely flared base. I just saw a demo last night with Jonas. He does good work. He’ll be a good one to take the tree to. Keep us posted if it’s development.

The foliage obscures the branch structure and trunk flow in the pictures. Best done in person when one can set aside the needles and see the overall. Your suggestion to take it to Jonas is an excellent choice. He is offering specific Pine development classes i believe.

Thanks for the help. I have been talking with Jonas and have signed up for a class with him in November. He suggested styling in November and then repotting in January or February. I will update after the class.

Had a workshop with Jonas today and repotted this tree. This tree is much healthier than the big tree and I look forward to developing it further. We were able to uncover a pretty decent base. Need to reduce the height at some point, not sure how low I will take it.
