So I found this sad little guy at the local Home Depot. The original top graft had died or been broken off at some point in its short life. The cashier gave him to me for a couple bucks. I figured itā€™s worth giving a second chance seeing how itā€™s got the start of a radial nebari and the spring growth has pretty coloration. I gave it a haircut and some cut paste. Iā€™m hoping to will bud out really low.

Iā€™m thinking I need to get this little guy out of that junk soil and into some good soil before it gets any bigger

It got a new pot and itā€™s roots spread out. Only one downward root that had to be snipped.

Thatā€™s good find! Question is that cut paste on the very top there where you cut it? If so, does the tree still grow from that point or does that inhibit it from doing so?

Yes that is cut paste. I cut almost a whole node above where I want my final cut to be to allow the maple to die back on its own to where I want. There is no node above where it is leafing out so no, it will not grow from there.

Apparently, the general big box shopper doesn't care much for broken trees. I got this one broken for a good price and took 10 cuttings before going to work on it.

Nope, good for us tho! Iā€™m eyeing some of the large shishigashiras they have at lowes. Iā€™m hoping one or two makes it to the discount rack this year.

So jealous, too hot down here for the big boxes to keep maples. I'm somewhat of an expert at getting clearance plants from them šŸ˜† they finally got in bald cypress, too pricy, but come fall when the employees think they're dying, I'll swipe a few on clearance

I wish our big box would get more than one or two bald cypresses. The two they get last about 5 minutes.
