I just picked up this Portulacaria afra the other day. All I've done with it so far is peel the glued on rocks off the top.
My question is. when I repot this into more appropriate soil, should I separate some of the stems into different containers or would I be better of leaving them in one clump? I eventually hope to use this as bonsai material, but this is my first attempt with this species and I don't know much about growing it.

Portulacaria afra 'variegata' grows very slowly. Of course you can separate and grow seperate trunks.

Make sure when you repot this that you let it dry beforehand so you can more easily release the roots from the soil. After putting the stems into new soil, do not water them into the container. Leave the soil dry and in filtered sun unil you see new foliage growth. Begin watering at that point.
