We found some new pots yesterday at a local home furnishing store. The bonsai class that we took a few years ago had us use 4” deep pots so that our trees had a better chance of survival.

These are 3-4” deep but had no drainage holes. With a diamond 1” hole saw I was able to drill these holes.

I am on a limited bonsai budget & these were $27 for all..

Yes a spray of water is needed to cool the cut.

The price of a bit that size at Home Depot is more than double the cost of your pots. Is there a more affordable option than the one I found?

Yes it was expensive but I have cut many (75?} holes with it & it is in good shape. Some of my larger pots have a few holes in them.

I think it will last a long time.

Amazon has some hole saws I bought a year ago and am very happy with. For longest life, immerse to pot in a container of water so the bit is under water. Feed, do not force the bit. The slower and softer the feed, the better. Let it eat its way through from the side you want to have the best appearance because when it breaks through, the hole is not as nice on the far side of the hole.

I use lots of unconventional pottery as bonsai and accent pots.
