Deciduous Azalea have some clusters of flowers which have no visible buds on the stems below the base of the flower cluster and these clusters go to seed and then the stems die. Prospective Nobel Laureate Prof. Dr. Boris F. Forsoothe has completed horticultural trials demonstrating these stems can be 100% saved by removing all the flower parts after they are past flowering. This proves that if the seeds are not allowed to mature, the stems will not die. For the record...

Notice that the plant is very chlorotic in June. It took 3 applications of Aluminum Sulfate to get to what you see in August. That, in addition to several doses of fulvic acid/liquid kelp/humic acid and other applications of 20-20-20 with Sprint 138, Epson Salts, Superthrive, & Copperas. It still is not as green as a companion plant bought at the same time. Both are still in the original potting soil. (It is 'Golden Lights' and the green one is 'Gibraltar')
